Case Study: Heath high School Shooting


  • December 1st, 1997
  • Heath high School, West Paducah, Kentucky
  • 14 year old Michael Carneal opened fire on students killing 3 and injuring 5 more
  • Seemed to be inspired by Stephen King novel 'Rage' which was found in his locker. King requested the print of this book to be stopped fearing it would inspire more killings.

Case Studies: Daniel Bartlam


  • April 25th, 2011
  • Daniel Bartlam, 14, murdered his mother by beating her with a hammer and then burnt her body
  • Police found on his computer deleted story involving a character called Daniel Bartlam who killed his mother in the same way
  • Boy had an obsession with horrors and video games. At the age of 13 he was watching multiple 18 rated films.
  • the murder he carried out seemed to imitate a killing using a hammer shown on Coronation Street - this video clip had been saved on Bartlam's computer

Case Study: Jamie Bulgar


  • February 12th, 1993
  • Jamie Bulgar murdered at age 2
  • New Strand Shopping Centre, Liverpool
  • Two ten year old boys - robert Thompson and Jon Venables
  • Jamie was led out of the shopping centre by the boys and was brutally beaten on the walk. They ended up at a train track where they tortured him further. The boys left Jamie on the train tracks hoping to make it look like an accident.
  • Child's Play 3 is thought to be the influence of the murder. The children had imitated a scene where Chucky's victim is splashed with blue paint.

Case Study: Columbine High School Shootings

  • April 20th, 1999
  • Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado
  • 13 people dead, over 20 wounded
  • After killings immediately committed suicide
  • Two teens, Eric Harris 18 and Dylan Klebold 17
  • Causes are considered to be many things including violent video games
  • Families of the dead have taken the issue to court trying to change the marketing and distribution of violent video games
  • One of the killers was seen with a sawn off shot gun called Arlene named after a character in the Doom video game
  • Doom asked players to stalk corridors shooting creatures with a variety of weapons
